Discover El Tenampa Deli And Grocery

Walking into El Tenampa Deli And Grocery feels less like stepping into a typical Brooklyn corner spot and more like being welcomed into a neighborhood kitchen that’s been doing things the right way for years. Sitting at 706 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11232, United States, this deli and grocery combo has quietly built a loyal following among locals who care about flavor, value, and familiarity. I’ve stopped here countless times after work, and the experience has stayed consistently solid, which is something not every neighborhood eatery can claim.

The menu is where this place really earns its reputation. You’ll find classic deli staples alongside Mexican-inspired comfort food that actually tastes homemade. One of the cooks once explained how they prep their meats early in the morning, slow-cooking and seasoning them throughout the day rather than rushing the process. That extra time shows up in the texture and depth of flavor. According to food safety guidance from the USDA, slow-cooked meats retain moisture better and allow spices to fully infuse, which explains why their tacos and burritos never taste dry or bland. A regular customer next to me summed it up perfectly by calling the food real comfort food, and that description stuck with me.

Beyond hot meals, the grocery section plays a huge role in why people keep coming back. Fresh produce, packaged essentials, and hard-to-find Latin pantry items are stocked thoughtfully. I’ve seen parents send their kids in with a short list, and they always come out with exactly what they needed. In neighborhoods like Sunset Park, small grocery-deli hybrids like this help bridge food access gaps, something organizations like the NYC Department of Health have highlighted as crucial for community well-being. El Tenampa fills that role without trying to be flashy.

What makes the experience even better is how the staff interacts with customers. On my third visit, one of the employees remembered my usual order and suggested a new salsa they had just started making in-house. That kind of attention builds trust, and trust is everything when it comes to food. Research from the National Restaurant Association shows that consistent service is one of the top factors influencing repeat visits, and this place clearly understands that. You’re not rushed, and questions about ingredients or portions are always answered honestly.

Reviews from locals often mention value, and that’s not an exaggeration. Portions are generous without feeling wasteful, and prices stay reasonable despite rising food costs across the city. I once compared a similar order from a chain deli nearby and paid almost 30 percent more for less food. That kind of comparison makes El Tenampa stand out as a smart choice, especially for families or anyone grabbing lunch on a budget.

Location also works in its favor. Being right on 4th Avenue makes it easy to stop by whether you’re commuting, running errands, or just exploring the neighborhood. Parking can be tricky during peak hours, which is common in Brooklyn, but most customers seem to plan around that. It’s worth noting that seating is limited, so it works best as a grab-and-go spot rather than a long sit-down meal. That’s really the only limitation I’ve noticed, and it hasn’t stopped people from lining up during lunch hours.

Over time, this deli has become one of those places people recommend without hesitation. Friends I’ve brought here now stop in on their own, and they usually text me afterward saying the same thing: it just feels reliable. Between the carefully prepared menu, the practical grocery selection, and the genuine service, El Tenampa Deli And Grocery continues to prove that you don’t need trends or hype to earn a strong reputation.

  • Holy Jesus Lord! These tacos are the best food of any kind I've ever tasted in my life. The staff here was watching me eat the whole time because I was making angry faces. They thought I didn't like the food. I was just angry that I didn't find this place earlier! I live ALLLLLLLLL the way on the other side of Brooklyn, a 16 mile drive! I will be coming here to eat every time I have a couple of hours on my hands! I will have to try absolutely everything on the menu. Their lingue tacos are just insane! Their bistec tacos are juicy and just amazing in every way! I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have found this place!

  • Weppppah! Some of the best tacos in Nuevo York! This gem is located behind a grocery store. Service is great and everyone is friendly, head to the back and order at the window, you’ll pay once your order is ready or if you stay right after you demolish those tacos. If you take to go they will give you little take away cups and foil wrap so you can help yourself to the bar- for the pico de Gallo, Spicey salsa, cucumber, lime, radish and mixed salad to go with your tacos. If you stay, you can just help yourself to how much you want. The tacos are excellent, I might have said that already but they are great! My favorite is the barbacoa de chivo and I’d go with the small tacos instead of the large. The taco to meat ratio is great and it allows you to have more variety.

  • Ordered a ton of food for my husband’s birthday day-of… I was looking for non-basic, fresh + delicious Mexican (which didn’t seem like it should be hard in Sunset Park). SO GRATEFUL to have found El Tenampa Everything was super delicious and you could totally taste the love. They were also super kind to work with, and helped me order for a large group. Mole enchiladas, tamales, guacamole, chips, salsas, rice, beans…. Everything was a huge step above standard Mexican options in the area… Feel like we found the gem and we will definitely be coming back.

  • Best huaraches I’ve eaten in a very long time. Chips were fresh, yummy melon aguas frescas —not overly sweetened. I had to wait close to 20 minutes for my food, but when I got it I could tell they made everything to order. Salsa bar had a wide variety of salsas and also included lime wedges, pickled jalapeños, and radish slices. The pico de gallo was delicious! The huaraches came three to an order. One was enough for me. My only suggestion would be to offer them a la carte. Definitely will return to try their chile rellanos and mole. FYI, this is a corner store with a small, sit down, window service restaurant in the back. Friendly staff and clean digs.

  • I came in today wanting some tacos and left with very very full belly! It was more than just tacos, their burritos and their delicious guacamole!! I would come here again. The wait for my order was not to long either maybe 12mins? I would definitely come back here soon!

  • this taco place is inside a deli the tacos were great. really loved the sides and options for the sides. loved you could grab as much as you wanted. atmosphere is ok - it does feel like a spot to eat and get out, which is fine you can order and pay after you eat. i’m not sure if it’s because we were non spanish speakers but it felt a little off the service and i think next time i rather take to go. a shame about the service considering how good the food is
